Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, who fought back with his angels; but the dragon was defeated, and he and his angels were not allowed to stay in heaven any longer. The huge dragon was thrown out-that ancient serpent, called the Devil, or Satan, that deceived the whole world. He was thrown down to earth, and all his angels with him- Revelation 12:7-9

Who is St Michael?

Saint Michael the Archangel is the Chief Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, and the archangel who cast Satan out of heaven. In the Catholic church, St Michael is the defender of the Eucharist.

Michael is also the guardian of souls, who defends us at the hour of death, evidenced in the book of Jude, where St Michael defends Moses' body from Satan:

His feast day is on the 29th September.

"In the same way also, these people have visions which make them sin against their own bodies; they despise God's authority and insult the glorious beings above. Not even the chief angel Michael did this. In his quarrel with the Devil, when they argued about who would have the body of Moses, Michael did not dare to condemn the Devil with insulting words, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”.  -Jude 8-9.

Why do we need St Michael?

St Michael protects and defends us against evil. Relying on St Michael to fight our spiritual battles recognises his power in defeating sin.
